YMCA of Orange County hosted the seventh annual Backpack & Supplies Donation Drive, distributing over 600 backpacks filled with school supplies to help financially disadvantaged young students acquire the tools to succeed in the new school year. The backpacks were donated students in the YMCA’s After School Education & Safety (ASES) Program. With help from state grants, ASES supports low-income families with a safe, educational afterschool environment.
Besides backpacks, other back-to-school supplies such as calculators, pencils, crayons, pens, glue sticks, notebooks and more were provided. Donations were collected through the YMCA’s 6 health & fitness centers as well as several community partners, churches and local businesses, including San Diego County Credit Union’s Stuff the Bus campaign. Supplies were collected at the credit union’s five Orange County locations in Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Costa Mesa, Mission Viejo and Westminster. By participating in the drive, the local community was able to help students at the YMCA program’s sites feel prepared and support their success throughout the school year.

Backpack & Supplies

The goal of the annual drive is to collect backpacks and school supplies from generous donors and send the supplies to its ASES program students. The YMCA aims to prepare young students to succeed academically, regardless of their socio-economic status. The drive, along with many of YMCA’s other youth development programs, helps to create better opportunities for children in disadvantaged communities through equal access and opportunities for learning in all communities.
